The Secret Life of Money leads listeners on a fascinating journey to uncover the sources of our monetary desires, and by understanding why money has the power to obsess us, free ourselves from destructive patterns and discover riches of the soul.
This wide-ranging treatment of how money secretly influences our lives includes chapters on the many forms of money, why money is so easily worshipped, why money sometimes feels more important than life, hoarding money, the source of riches, inheritance, and the stock market. Crawford, a teller of entertaining tales, gathers stories and myths from around the world that help us understand why money is so much more than the useful tool that we may think it to be.

In the past I have read several books on money issues; however, this is the most unusual book I have ever read on money. This 289 page hardback cover book (The Secret life of money: teaching tales of spending, receiving, saving, and owing by Tad Crawford) covers the history of money from the ancient Gods mythology to the more contemporary use of value exchange such as the stock market and credit cards. This interesting and informative book is organized into nine detailed chapters which include the following topics: the many forms of money, the almighty dollar, money and sacrifice, hoarding money, the source of riches, inheritance, and indebtedness, changing symbols and bulls and bears.
There are numerous ancient mythological tales to emphasize the various points the author is attempting to make in each chapter. It is clear to me that the author seems to either be conflicted about the value of money in a society or actually sees it as some necessary evil. To me, money is merely a method to barter. In ancient times before, and even after a more practical method was developed to pay for goods, one would barter in order to trade goods. I think the Goddess Moneta would approve of the more modern use of money.
In any case, even though I did not care for the author’s view of money I did learn a lot of historical significant information and thought this book was a good read.
